Motorcyclist Airifted Following Turnpike Accident

Driver was taken to Robert Wood Johnson via helicopter Sunday afternoon.

The NJ State Police are investigating a motorcycle accident that seriously injured one person and closed a portion of the turnpike down for a half hour, Sunday.

According to police, a Kawasaki motorcycle was traveling south on the NJ Turnpike at a high rate of speed before losing control and hitting another vehicle near Exit 9 of the highway.

Police said the driver of the motorcycle came off of the bike and landed on the left shoulder of the road. Suffering from serious bodily injury, the driver was airlifted by Northstar Medevac to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. People in the second vehicle had minor injuries and also were taken to RWJ.

Police officials said the accident is under investigation and would not release the names of the victims.

The southbound inner and outer lanes were closed for 30 minutes while Northstar airlifted the victims out of the area. Two left lanes of the inner roadway were closed for three hours during the investigation.
