UPDATE: Route 18 North Open, Route 1 South Still Closed

If you're traveling Route 1 near Route 18, find an alternate route. A gasoline tanker accident has shut chunks of the area down until 2 p.m.

Traffic will be tied up until at least 2 p.m. while the remains of an overturned gasoline tanker truck are cleaned up. As a result, Route 1 south is closed between the Edison border and Sears. Route 18 northbound had been closed, but is now open.

According to the East Brunswick Police Department, the truck was carrying thousands of gallons of gasoline when it rolled over, causing Route 18 northbound heading into New Brunswick and Route 1 to be closed.

Route 18 north up to the exit for Route 1 is open but Route 18 north is closed to New Brunswick Traffic.

You can access Route 18 south from Route 1 north and can also access Route 1 north from Route 18 north.

Route 1 south is closed from the Edison border to Sears.

The tanker overturned on the Route 18 north ramp leading onto Route 1 south around 5:30 a.m.

The driver of the tanker ended up with a minor injury, and there was no fire or damage to other vehicles, according to the New Brunswick Police Department.
