Train Derailment in Carteret Causing Traffic Delays

Two train cars were carrying hazardous materials that are not dangerous to the public.

A freight train carrying hazardous materials derailed off Roosevelt Avenue in Carteret Thursday morning, nj.com reports.

According to News 12, Interchange 12 and the northbound truck lanes on the New Jersey Turnpike are being shut down between the South Brunswick split and Exit 12 as a precaution.

Emergency response teams, including firefighters, police and hazardous materials personnel, were working to lift two rail cars that were carrying acidic and noxious materials that were flammable but not dangerous to the public, according to nj.com.

Two cars flipped off the tracks while attempting to back into a facility near Exit 12 of the New Jersey Turnpike at 1 a.m., according to the report.
