Eagle Scout Helps Keep East Brunswick Green

Eagle Scout project included constructing and placing disposal units for fisihng tackle in township parks.

After attaining the highest rank in the Boy Scout world and working closely with the township recycling department to start a fishing line recycling program, Sam Berzok was honored Monday night in front of the Township Council in the form of a proclamation by Mayor David Stahl.

Berzok, a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 223, recently became an Eagle Scout after completing an extensive service project with The township. By working with the recycling and public works departments, Berzok was able to install plastic receptacles for used fishing rods and tackle at seven locations across town: the Weston Mill Pond boat launch, along Farrington Lake, the Hardenberg and Church Lane boat launches, two locations at Dallenbach Lake and the Ireland Brook Trout Site off Rive Ave.

“By leaving fishing line around on the ground we as a community threaten the health and safety of our environment,” Berzok said to the council.

“The attainment of this rank by Sam required diligent hard work and the inspirational leadership of his leader and his parents,” Stahl said. "Sam has earned this honor by demonstrating the qualities of dedication, perseverance and self sacrifice, all of which suggest that he is now and will continue to be an outstanding member of this community.”

“I’m glad that Troop 223 and myself have the opportunity to serve and volunteer in support of such an active community,” Berzok said of his project, which was first proposed in February 2010. “We are always here to help and look forward to working with the township in the future.”

“One of the reasons for doing this tonight was the action on Sam’s project was so involved with the township with our recycling department that I thought it was important to recognize Sam tonight,” the mayor added.
