East Brunswick to Host Rush Holt Talk on Obamacare

Small business owners can learn more about the impact of the Affordable Care Act on Sept. 30 at the East Brunswick Public Library.

The looming specter of the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare, has caused quite a bit of hand-wringing for small business owners.

For those with more questions than answers, U.S. Rep. Rush Holt will host an information session on Sept. 30 at the East Brunswick Public Library at 9 a.m. The Small Business Health Insurance Options Program (SHOP) workshop will feature speakers from the Small Business Association and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Also scheduled to appear are Al Titone, New Jersey District Director of the United States Small Business Administration; John Sarno, Esq., President of the Employers Association of New Jersey; and Tom Dwyer, of The Dwyer Healthcare Group.

Speakers will discuss the various provisions of the Affordable Health Care Act that could effect small businesses.

SHOP is a new online health insurance marketplace where businesses with 50 or fewer employees can compare and purchase health insurance. Rep. Holt's office said the program could allow business owners to potentially qualify for tax credits that will help cover the cost of premiums.

The cost to enroll in the health care exchanges, which open on Oct. 1, is dependent on age, family size, income and other variables, which includes where you live. The average cost of basic coverage nationally is $249 a month, not including tax credits.

According to CNN Money, the premium for the benchmark plan in New Jersey is $260 for a 27-year-old individual and $943 for a family of four.

The workshop will be held at 9 a.m. on Monday in the Main Meeting Room of the East Brunswick Public Library, located at 2 Jean Walling Civic Center Drive in East Brunswick.
