Proposed Rues Lane Camera May Not Be Popular

Second camera is under consideration by Township Council, which has cited the effectiveness of a traffic camera at Tices Lane and Route 18.

Residents have told Patch that they are on Tices Lane and Route 18. Doug Brown, a resident of East Brunswick, wanted to make sure the Township Council knew that was not likely to be any more popular.

Brown spoke at Tuesday night’s council meeting, saying drivers would become agitated with East Brunswick issuing too many tickets and speculated about the threat of a class action lawsuit.

“At the end of five years, you’re going to have 140,000 people that are mad at East Brunswick because they got a ticket in East Brunswick,” Mr. Brown said. “What if a smart lawyer, four or five years from now, decides he’s going to have a class action lawsuit?”

The Township Council is considering a red-light traffic camera at Rues Lane and Route 18. It would be the second camera in the township.

Since it went live, 10,384 traffic violations have been issued for a total of $902,668, with the township and county each receiving $285,560 and the remainder going to the state and ATS.

Several council members have expressed support for the camera, while Councilman Michael Hughes is opposed. The council must pass an ordinance to approve the camera.
