State, Federal Money to Benefit EB Roads

The township has received grants that will be put to use on the Dunhams Corner Road bike way and repaving of Dutch Road.

A bike way that will run all the way to Heavenly Farms and improvements to Dutch Road are future projects that will be made possible through two recently awarded grants to East Brunswick.

According to a press release from the state Department of Transportation, 18 towns in Middlesex County were awarded a total of $6.2 million in Local Aid grants to put toward street, safety and quality of life improvements.

East Brunswick received a federal Transportation Enhancement grant in the amount of $467,000, which will be put toward the extension of a bike way on Dunhams Corner Road, according to Greg Potkulski, Director of Planning and Engineering for the township.

The bike way currently runs on Dunhams Corner Road and ends at Crystal Springs. The grant will allow the township to expand the bike way to reach Heavenly Farms Park, Potkulski said.

The bike way's completion is more than a year away, Potkulski said, as the township was just notified of the grant and it in the process of obtaining the permits needed for the project.

A total of 406 Local Aid grants totaling $86.5 million were awarded to towns across New Jersey, according to the release.

The township has also received a Municipal Aid grant in the amount of $300,000 that will be put toward repaving of Dutch Road between Fresh Ponds Road and the New Jersey Turnpike, Potkulski said.

The Dutch Road project should be underway by early 2014, he said.
