With More Snow Coming, East Brunswick Spends More To Fill Potholes

Towns in Middlesex County, such as East Brunswick, are spending more time and money on pothole repair this year than in previous years, according to NJ.com.

“When we’re not plowing and salting, we’re filling potholes,” said Woodbridge Mayor John McCormac, according to NJ.com. “All departments are on duty including parks, sewers, roads and sanitation teams. It’s all hands on deck this winter.”

McCormac said the town has a pothole hotline — (732) 726-2325 — for residents to call to report potholes on local streets, according to NJ.com.

“This is the worst winter,” McCormac told NJ.com. “This big one coming tomorrow could be the worst of all because we still have ice on some of our streets that we can’t remove. We still have cars stuck in the ice.”

He said Woodbridge budgeted $750,000 for snow cleanup this winter and has spent $350,000 on salt alone so far, according to NJ.com.

“It’s an awful and expensive winter and it isn’t over,” the mayor said.

East Brunswick Mayor David Stahl said the township has tried to keep up with the pothole repairs as best it can and has done a lot of patching, but it's all temporary, according to NJ.com.

“We know this spring we’re going to have to go out and make permanent repairs,” he told NJ.com.

Stahl told NJ.com he is rearranging the capital budget to make a much larger investment in road repairs and repaving due to this winter.

“I’m asking for close to $2 million for roads,” the mayor told NJ.com. “We’re going to be very aggressive on infrastructure repair.”

Stahl said he is going to ask the council for money to purchase brining equipment that would create solutions that can be put on the roads before a storm, reducing the town’s dependence on salt, according to NJ.com.
