Early Dismissal on Thursday Due to Heat

The East Brunswick School District will have an early dismissal Thursday. Central and Hammarskjold field trips canceled.

The East Brunswick School District will have a half day tomorrow, Thursday, June 9, due to predictions of extreme heat.

Churchill and the High School will be dismissed at 11:58 a.m., Hammarskjold at 12:43 p.m.; and all elementary schools will be dismissed at 1:45 p.m.

Morning kindergarten classes will be dismissed at 10:55 a.m. Afternoon kindergarten classes will begin at 11:55 a.m. and dismiss at 1:45 p.m.

For ASK/Encore students, parents are asked to pick up their children as soon as possible after dismissal. Students will be supervised until parent pick up.

The National Weather Service has put a Heat Advisory in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday and is calling for temperatures during the day to be 97 degrees, with heat index values around 100. According to the service, the most dangerous conditions will be in the afternoon and early evening hours when a hot and humid air mass causes temperatures to swell, creating dangerous conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, there will be a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m., with a low around 70. Friday is expected to have highs near 87 degrees with a continued chance of showers and thunderstorms.

 Important Notes:

* Bowne-Munro fifth grade trip – students will return at 1:30 for 1:45 p.m. dismissal.

* Central second grade trip – postponed until June 16.

* Hammarskjold mentors trip – postponed, date to be determined

* East Brunswick High School Sports and Entertainment Marketing trip to Philadelphia – as scheduled

* ASK/Encore, Parents are asked to pick up their children as soon as possible after dismissal. Students will be supervised until parent pick up.

* The District Band Concert to be held at the EBPAC at 7 p.m. will go on as scheduled.

* The Board of Education meeting at Churchill at 8 p.m. will be held as scheduled. This meeting included student/staff commendations.

 The National Weather Service recommends taking extra precautions, including drinking plenty of fluids, staying in an air conditioned room, staying out of the sun, and checking up on relative neighbors.

Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location and medical or emergency officials should be called.

Do not leave anyone unattended in a vehicle for any length of time.
