School Tax Rate Erroneously Reported

School officials said the tax rate would increase 13 cents for the coming school year while the township says the rate will actually go up 22 cents.

An increase in school taxes was misreported by district officials earlier this month, according to a report in the East Brunswick Sentinel.

According to the report, at a March 19 budget hearing, school business administrator Bernardo Giuliana said the tax rate for the 2013-14 school budget would increase 13 cents from $6.09 to $6.22 per $100 of assessed valuation in the township.

Lou Neely, Chief Financial Officer for the township, told the Sentinel that the tax rate will actually increase 22 cents to $6.31 per $100 of assessed valuation.

The 22 cent increase will result in East Brunswick taxpayers with a home assessed at $200,000 seeing an increase of $440 for a total of $12,620 in school taxes for the year, according to the report.

Neely told the Sentinel that the district "made a mistake" on figuring the tax base.
