Whiz Kid: Ilayda Guneren

This week's Whiz Kid is a leader in the classroom. Congratulations Ilayda Gunerenz.

Each week, East Brunswick Patch will seek suggestions from readers for individual kids, youth groups, teens and even sports teams that wow us with their accomplishments. We want to hear about these amazing children and teens and select one each week as the Patch Whiz Kid.

This week third grade teacher Mary Leone nominated 9-year-old Ilayda Guneren.

Congratulations Ilayda Guneren, you are this week’s Patch Whiz Kid.

Here’s what Leone said about Ilayda.

“Ilayda is an exceptional third-grader.  She excels in school work, demonstrates good manners and is kind to everyone in the school.  She speaks with a kind, gentle voice, even when upset.  Ilayda is a role model in the classroom and the school for problem solving. She has an endless supply of friends and is respected by everyone she meets.

“Ilayda is also an accomplished gymnast and dancer.  Her parents believe in the importance of being well rounded and, just as with her schoolwork, Ilayda does her best in these activities.

“Being a big sister is probably Ilayda’s favorite activity.  Her kindness toward her younger sister defies “sibling rivalry.”  Many of Ilayda’s stories are centered around family and the importance of being kind to siblings.  This is a character trait that Ilayda practices throughout her life.

Whiz Kid's Key to Awesomeness: “Ilayda believes that everyone deserves a chance for success.  Much of the learning in our classroom is focused on partner and group work.  Ilayda never complains about her partner or group and she is the one student I know I can pair with a struggling student who has a negative attitude and she will manage to help that student experience success.  I’ve heard other students say, “Poor Ilayda” as they refer to the group she’s assigned.  Ilayda has never complained or even mentioned her dissatisfaction when placed in a challenging group.

I know that Ilayda’s caring and kind demeanor will bring her success.  She is truly and “Ambassador” in this classroom.

Do you know a great kid who made Eagle Scout or did your local soccer team take the championship? They may be our next Patch Whiz Kid honoree.
