Bears Face Tough Road Test Friday

East Brunswick High School football visits undefeated Monroe Friday.

After picking up their first win of the season last week, the road will not get any smoother for a young East Brunswick High School football team.

Sitting with a record of 1-2, EBHS will visit undefeated Monroe, one of the top ranked teams in the area this season. After East Brunswick lost to South Brunswick and Sayreville by a combined total of 84-7 over the first two weeks, the Bears finally found their mojo last week.

The Bears scored two second quarter touchdowns before holding on for a 14-12 win over North Brunswick. The touchdowns came with the Bears trailing 6-0.

Quarterback Kevin Hemmings hit Javon Ganzaroli with a 15-yard pass for the first score. Jon Gerhatz then found the end zone on a 5-yard run.

Kim Flynn's two PATs proved to be the difference. North Brunswick was unsuccessful in a pair of two-point conversion attempts.

Monroe comes into the game rolling on a balanced offense powered by the passing of quarterback Stephen Karoly and ground game of running back Akeer Franklin, two of the county's statistical leaders.

Things won't get any easier for the young Bears this season. After Monroe, showdown with last year's Group V state finalist Manalapan looms. The Bears will face six teams who qualified for the state playoffs last year, four of which reached a state final, over the course of an unforgiving season.

The action will kickoff Friday at 7 p.m. at Monroe High School, located at 200 Schoolhouse Road in Monroe Township.
