Bears Try to Rebound Against Sayreville Friday

East Brunswick High School football team faces tough task at home as Sayreville comes to town.

The schedule makers were not kind to the East Brunswick High School football team this year.

Following a season opener where the Bears traveled to South Brunswick to battle the defending Group V State Champions, EBHS now will welcome Sayreville to town Friday evening.

The Bears opened the year last week on the road with a 42-7 loss to South Brunswick in the debut of new EBHS Head Coach Bob Molarz.

East Brunswick hung tough in the first quarter on the legs of Jon Gerhartz. Bears quarterback Kevin Hemmings connected with Gerhartz on a long pass play to set up a 5-yard Gerhartz run to even the score at 7-7.

After a 12-yard touchdown run by Amir Johnson made it 14-7 South Brunswick, the Bears were driving to even the score when Skyler Sciandra intercepted a pass and returned it 80-yards to make the score 21-7 for South Brunswick.

With just three returning starters on offense, Molarz faces an uphill climb getting the young Bears ready for another tough draw Friday against a Sayreville team looking to rebound themselves.

Sayreville opened the season ranked 13th overall in the state before losing a shocking upset to 40th ranked Old Bridge by a score of 35-19 last week. The Bears will be tasked with shutting down explosive Sayreville junior star Myles Hartsfield, who had 114 rushing yards on 11 carries with two scores on the ground, along with two receptions for 67 yards and a touchdown in the air against Old Bridge.

Unfortunately, things won't get much easier for the Bears moving forward as they try to break in so many new starters. The Bears will face six teams who qualified for the state playoffs last year, four of which reached a state final.

The contest against Sayreville is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff at East Brunswick High School, located at  380 Cranbury Road in East Brunswick.
