Boys Basketball Set for Another Good Year

East Brunswick got it's first chance to show how got it is by defeateding Perth Amboy Friday 30-61.

The East Brunswick High School boys basketball team has a combined 41 wins the past two seasons. According to Coach Bo Henning, don't expect to see much of a change this year.

"Our scrimmages have gone well," Henning said. "The kids have done a good job to prepare for the season. If I don't mess it up, we should have a good season."

Henning was just having some fun. He's in his 24th year on the job and guided the team to a 21-5 mark last season. He knows what he's doing.

"We have a chance to be really good," Henning said. "We have a good nucleus back from last season. We lost five players, but only one starter."

East Brunswick has five guys back that were at least part-time starters last season. Included in that group are Mike Summerer and Rob Ukawuba, both Greater Middlesex Conference Red Division all-stars.

Summerer, a senior, is in his fourth year as a starter. He's 6' 4" and plays forward. He averages about 11 points a game.

Ukawuba is a 6' 2" forward. The junior averaged about 15 points a game.

Abu Bestawros (senior) is a 6' 2" forward that also started last year.

Amir Bell (sophomore) and Joe Ross (senior) also got some time in the starting lineup. Bell is 6' 3". Ross is 6' 1" and came back after being injured earlier in the season.

The other members of the team are Jake Krantz (a 6' 5" junior), Avi Oren (a 5' 8" senior), Ethan Folz (a 5' 9" junior), Dan Leung (a 5' 9" junior), Cole Lipman (a 6' 6" senior), Gary Baumer ( a 6' sophomore), Mike Manne (a 6' 5" junior) and Andrew Vespol (a 5' 9" senior).

This is a group used to winning. Not only was the varsity 21-5 last year, the JV team was undefeated.

"This is a versatile team," Henning said. "We have size, so we can play big when needed. We can also play fast when we want. It's a hard team to defend. We can shoot well. The guys are unselfish. We're good inside and outside."

East Brunswick got it's first chance to show how got it is by defeateding Perth Amboy Friday 30-61.

Noting how the team has won 20 and 21 games the past two seasons, Henning said, "We could match that. We have a good team. We upgraded the schedule, so it is possible to be better and not have as good a record."
