East Brunswick Wrestling Team Wins Five Titles, Finishes Second at Matawan Tournament

The boys' and girls' basketball teams both dropped their season openers.

The East Brunswick High School wrestling team finished second at the Matawan Icebreaker tournament on Saturday after walking away with five championships, according to nj.com.

The Bears captured titles at 106, 113, 160, 170 and 220 pounds. East Brunswick finished with 179 points. Old Bridge won the team title by scoring 201.5 points. Governor Livingston was third with 158.

Mark Schliefer won the 106 pound title by defeating Old Bridge’s Tanner Corbett, 9-3, in the final.

At 113, Tyler Schwartz earned a 3-1 decision over Alec Gleason in the final for the title.

Jonathan Schleifer pinned Monmouth’s Mike Montefinese after four minutes, 52 seconds to win the 160-pound title.

Samuel Kim edged Red Bank Catholic’s Aiden Byrnes, 4-3, in the 170-pound final to claim that division’s crown.

Boys’ basketball

The boys’ basketball team dropped a heartbreaker in its home opener, falling to St. Joseph (Metuchen), 46-44, on Friday night, according to nj.com.

Amir Bell led the way with a double-double, as he scored 15 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Gary Baumer had 13 points for the Bears.

East Brunswick is 0-1 and hosts North Brunswick on Friday.

Girls’ basketball

The Bears dropped their season opener at Edison, 44-32, according to nj.com. They return to the court on Friday at South Brunswick.
