EBHS Bears Set for Big Season

Football squad hopes to rebound from an off year in 2011.

With 18 returning starters, the East Brunswick Varsity Football team is looking to improve on last season.

“We have about 20 players with varsity game experience,” said Marcus Borden in an e-mail. “We need to stay healthy. We open up with four playoff teams in first five games.”

The bears will see nine returning starters on each side of the ball, including seniors Chris Ramos (RB), Jayson Parker (FB) Jared Tardiff (C) Wes Lynch (G/DT) Matt Bettin (LB), Devrim Dereli (G), Brian Kim (G) and Lee Urschel (DB), and juniors Jon Gerhartz (QB/DB) and Michael Quintin (DE).

After making an appearance in the Central Jersey Group 4 quarterfinals in 2010, the team fell to 1-9 in 2011. But with a solid core and talented newcomers, including junior defensive ends Kyle Kelliher and Antonio Perez, and sophomores Joe Cheta, Tom Berzok, Kevin Hemmings and Aaron McSweeney, Borden is hoping to win the team’s first state championship since 2009.

One returning player that fans can expect to see on the sidelines this year is Chris Kania, a Special Education student who played for four seasons. Kania will serve as a graduate assistant until he graduates in two years.
