Greater Middlesex Soccer Tournaments Under Way

The East Brunswick boys' and girls' soccer teams each advanced out of the first round.

High school soccer teams in Middlesex County wrapped up their regular seasons this week, but before beginning their quests for state titles, there’s still a matter of the conference championship.

The Greater Middlesex Conference tournament began for both boys’ and girls’ soccer this week. Here is a list of results for South Brunswick, East Brunswick, Woodbridge and New Brunswick boys’ and girls’ soccer teams, with first round tournament games noted.

Boys’ soccer

East Brunswick 3, New Brunswick 0: Kevin Walsh found the back of the net twice to push the Bears past New Brunswick in the first round of the Greater Middlesex Conference tournament. Alex Mora had a goal. Jesse Stabinsky, Joshua Barkoff and Adam Rosa had assists.

New Brunswick goalie Miguel Angel Vasquez made 10 saves in the loss. 

South Brunswick 2, Hopewell Valley 1: South Brunswick held a 1-0 lead at halftime, and needed one more goal in the second half to ensure the victory.

Tommy Dorsay and Kyle Goodwin scored the goals, with assists from Kyle Goodwin and Kyle DeGroff.

Erich Kaiser and Arvind Swaminathan each made two saves in goal. 

South Brunswick 4, Sayreville 1: South Brunswick scored three times in the first half en route to the victory. Kyle Goodwin and Patrick Grudnick each had two goals, and Tommy Dorsay had two assists.

South Brunswick 6, Middlesex 0: Kyle Goodwin had two goals and three assists to lead South Brunswick past Middlesex in the first round of the Greater Middlesex Conference tournament.

Other goals came from Jorge De la bandera, Tommy Dorsay, Patrick Grudnick and Paul Grudnick. Joe Mastro had an assist.

Erich Kaiser and Arvind Swaminathan split time in goal, making a total of three saves.

Metuchen 1, Woodbridge 0: Metuchen knocked Woodbridge out of the Greater Middlesex Conference tournament in the play-in game. Cameron Kessler scored for Metuchen.

Girls’ soccer

Bridgewater-Raritan 2, East Brunswick 1: Ellie DiLiberto scored the lone goal for East Brunswick. Goalie Alex Kalafor made three saves. All the scoring came in the first half.

East Brunswick 5, South Plainfield 0: Gabrielle Sachs led four players in scoring with two goals as East Brunswick advanced out of the first round of the Greater Middlesex Conference tournament.

Sydney Rosa had a goal and two assists. Kayla Kennedy and Carla LaRocca also scored for the Bears. Morgan Crooks, Katherine McCulley and Kaitlin Roughan added assists.

Gabrielle Benzillo and Alex Kalafor split time in goal, making a total of three saves. 

South Brunswick 6, West Windsor-Plainsboro South 0: Francesca Dimitrakis led the way with three goals. Allison Boni, Brielle Errico and Arianna Mora added goals in the win.

Miho Yamada had two assists. Other assists came from Jane Fahey, Julianna Franco and Lauren LoMenzo.

Goalie Sydney Schneider had one save to secure the shutout.

South Brunswick 2, Piscataway 1: Brielle Errico and Jenna Mastronardi each scored to push South Brusnwick past Piscataway in the first round of the Greater Middlesex Conference tournament.

Cagnie Antzcak and Julianna Franco provided the assists.

Goalie Sydney Schneider made six saves. 

Bound Brook 3, New Brunswick 2: Yaqueline Juare scored both goals for New Brunswick, who pushed Bound Brook into double overtime before eventually succumbing. Goalie Altagracia Diaz made nine saves.

Spotswood 4, New Brunswick 0: Goalie Altagracia Diaz made 14 saves, but it wasn’t enough for New Brunswick in the loss.

Old Bridge 3, Woodbridge 1: Alexus Fuentes scored the only goal for the Barrons, in the second half. Goalie Justine Stefura made seven saves. 

Woodbridge 2, Middlesex 0: Hadiza Mamman was responsible for both of the Barrons’ goals. Alexus Fuentes and Karina Roldan had the assists. Goalie Justine Stefura made five saves.

Monroe 3, Woodbridge 0: Monroe knocked Woodbridge out of the Greater Middlesex Conference tournament in the first round. Goalie Justine Stefura made nine saves in the loss. 

Football

Kevin Hemmings threw a pair of touchdown passes and the East Brunswick High School football team was tied with J.P. Stevens heading into the final quarter, but J.P. Stevens pulled away with a 30-20 win, according to nj.com.

East Brunswick got on the scoreboard first, when Kyle Kelliher returned an interception 28 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

Kelliher caught a 7-yard pass from Hemmings in the second quarter, and the Bears held a 14-7 halftime lead.

J.P. Stevens tied the game in the third quarter, and outscored East Brunswick, 16-6, to take home the win.

The Bears final touchdown, in the fourth quarter, came on a 7-yard pass from Hemmings to Jon Gerhartz.

East Brunswick fell to 1-5. The Bears visit Edison on Friday night, 7 p.m.
