Hockey Community Rallies for Monroe Player

Alumni hockey game set for Saturday in Brick.

The local hockey community is coming together on Saturday to support the family of one of their own.

It was on January 4 when Monroe Township High School senior Michael Nichols was playing with his team in North Jersey against Vernon when he crashed head-on into the boards. Nichols suffered a fracture of his C5 vertebrae and is currently being treated at Morristown Medical Center before being moved to a rehab facility.

"As everyone knows Mike is as tough as they come," Nichols' parents wrote earlier this month on a Facebook page dedicated to his recovery. "Mike rested well last night. There are no significant changes to his condition today. We believe that everyone's prayers are having an impact on Mikey's recovery. We ask that you all continue with your good wishes and prayers."

As part of the efforts to help the Nichols family through this difficult time an alumni hockey game is being held on Saturday at the Ocean Ice Palace in Brick. The game starts at 4 p.m. and admission is just $5 for an event that includes a raffle and a puck toss for a chance to win tickets to a luxury box at a New Jersey Devils game.

South Brunswick hosted a fundraiser for Nichols during a home game earlier this month at ProSkate.
