Players of the Past Hit The Pitch Once Again

Men and women soccer players returned to the pitch last month to raise money for two causes.

East Brunswick High School soccer players from the past returned to the pitch June 18 to raise some money for a good cause and to have some fun.

Returning graduates returned for an alumni game to raise money for the Scholarship funds of Dan Hayston and Lou Kosa. Hayston was a former boys coach Kosa was a longtime girls coach. Hayston passed away several years ago and Kosa died in the fall.

Current boys coach Terry McKibbin began the game shortly after Hayston died, about six years ago, said Celine Clark, a former player who helped organize the event. For the girls, this was the first game.

About seven women players and 17 men players attended the event this year.

“A group was started on Facebook in March or so and has about 80 members,” said Clark in an email. “There were about 10 parents/spectators. When Lou passed away, another player had messaged about 12 girls on Facebook about his death and it made me think that we should have an alumni game and how much I miss all those girls. That is how I became involved. The current girls soccer coach is also a softball coach, which makes organizing anything in the spring a little difficult for him. He is a good friend and colleague of mine, so I volunteered myself to get things going for the first game. We are hoping the numbers continue to grow. The boys have said that they had up to 40 men at a past event.”

Clark said she hopes to see both events grow in the coming years and would like to see it become a community event, much like a Homecoming Game.
