Tennis Team Wins GMC

Bears are champs for sixth time in a row.

The defending champs are once again the defending champs.

The East Brunswick High School girls tennis team won three of the five flights on the way to the Greater Middlesex Conference championship.

"We have now won the GMC six years in a row," East Brunswick Coach Brian McInerney said. "To win any championship six times in a row is impressive."

East Brunswick did so well in the GMC, it had the championship put away before any of the title matches were held on Sept. 26. East Brunswick then went out and won three championships.

Anastasia Mogilevski repeated as the champion at second singles.

"She lost the first set and then fought back to earn the championship," McInerney said.

McInerney got to see more of this match because it was the longest one. With his team taking part in four championship matches, he had a very busy day.

"It's kind of like a (regular season match) with all of the girls playing, but this one was different," McInerney said. "All of these are close and competitive contests."

Dana Tsang won at third singles.

The first doubles team of Lisa Zhang and Adelina Abdulia was also victorious.

The second doubles team of Grace Zhang and Aishwarya Sridhar were defeated in the title match. Still, a second-place finish in the GMC is quite an accomplishment.

At first singles, Hannah Molk advanced to the semifinals before being defeated.

"It was a difficult year because we hadn't played a lot of the top teams yet," McInerney said. "There wasn't a lot of familiarity."

One thing which was clear is that East Brunswick is still the team to beat in the GMC.

"We have had so much success, we have a target on our backs," McInerney said.

"It's become a tradition for us to win the GMC. It's a challenge to keep that up, but the girls have stepped up and done the job."

Notes: East Brunswick is 7-2 in the regular season. It has wins against North Brunswick (5-0), Woodbridge (5-0), Old Bridge (5-0), Sayreville (5-0), Piscataway (5-0), Millville (3-2) and Peddie (3-2). It lost to Westfield (3-2) and Bishop Eustace (3-2).
