We've got at least another 24 hours of 'too hot to handle' weather facing us.

Be on the look out today for temperatures of 97 with a heat value index of up to 101 degrees by this afternoon in the East Brunswick and central New Jersey area, according to the National Weather Service.

To deal with the heat, the Borough of Milltown has "opened" cooling centers at library and senior center. In East Brunswick, the East Brunswick Public Library is open until 9 p.m.

Record highs are being predicted as dangerous heat surges across the Northeast today. The NSW has issued an 'excessive heat warning', meaning that the combination of heat and humidity can be a lethal mix, particularly for pets, small children, the elderly, and the incapacitated.

The heat surge is supposed to start gradually dropping in degree starting around 6 am Friday morning, until temperatures reach more seasonable levels on Saturday.

Temperatures Thursday night are predicted to drop to 80 degrees.

Meanwhile, authorities are urging people to stay in air-conditioned environments and limited outdoor exposure, particularly working outside during these conditions. They warn to recognize the signs of heat stroke and heat exhaustion; to keep hydrated; wear loose, light-colored clothing; to take frequent breaks in a cool environment if you must be outside.

Also remember that pets can't take the heat. Do not leave your dog in a car! Keep your pets inside the house and keep them furnished with water.
