A woman is now at the helm of the Rutgers University athletics department for the first time in Rutgers history, following the hiring of new AD Julie Hermann. Hermann was introduced to the public on Wednesday at a press conference at the Rutgers Visitor Center. She comes from the University of Louisville, where she served as the executive senior associate director of athletics under acclaimed AD Tom Jurich. The derby will be held on Saturday at the East Brunswick Baseball Complex.
The East Brunswick Baseball League invites baseball fans to its annual home run derby from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, May 18 at the East Brunswick Baseball Complex, 365 Dunhams Corner Road. According to the league, the day will feature a parade, music provided by the School of Rock, the derby and meals for purchase provided by Carrabba's Italian Grill. Proceeds from the day will benefit The Strike 3 Foundation, a nonprofit group that raises funding and awareness for childhood cancer research, according to the league. Centerfielder Tom Krapf had a stellar week and is the first Patch Bear of the Week.
Welcome to East Brunswick Patch’s Bear of the Week, a weekly look at some of the standout athletes in East Brunswick schools. This week’s player, nominated by the district Athletic Department, is senior center fielder Tom Krapf. “Tom has the unique ability to get his teammates to play at a higher level,” said Frank Noppenberger, Supervisor of Athletics and Physical Education. “His baseball charisma is contagious to the players.” Tom was named Bear of the Week after he hit .406 with five stolen bases and scored the tying run last week against Old Bridge in the 12th inning. The East Brunswick Soccer Club's program helps those with special needs enjoy the "beautiful game."
It’s an easy way to make a difference, and a great way to get outside and have some fun. TOPSoccer (The outreach Program for Soccer) is hosted by EBSC every Saturday morning at the level playing field at Heavenly Farms. Since its inception, it has promoted athletics, fitness and soccer to special needs children and young adults. The program pairs “Buddy” coaches with students and consists of stretching and ball work, fun games and skill development and then full-field games to close each weekly session. The team won the Garden Empire Volleyball Association’s Regional Championship in Club Division.
On Saturday, April 27, the Helios Volleyball Club sent its Girls’ 13 and under team, Helios 13 Malibu, to the Powerzone Volleyball Center in Denville, NJ, to compete in the Regional championship tournament of the Garden Empire Volleyball Association (“GEVA”). The GEVA Region includes all of New Jersey and south eastern New York, and Helios was competing at the Club level of the tournament. The top 12 teams from GEVA competed in Long Island that day at the Open level. Helios started the day shorthanded, with several players injured or unable to join the squad until later in the day, and they looked to be in some danger as they lost their opening match to Rival Volleyball Club out of Long Island. Rutgers alumnus and NBA coach Jordan takes the place of Mike Rice.
By welcoming home the admired "Fast Eddie", Rutgers University took a step in the next direction of the Rutgers basketball program on Tuesday by introducing new head basketball coach Eddie Jordan. Jordan, 58, takes the job of former head coach Mike Rice, who was fired in April after a video of unorthodox and abusive coaching methods was made public. The Rutgers athletics department continues to pick up the pieces following the fallout of the scandal, which also caused the resignation of athletic director Tim Pernetti and assistant basketball coach Jimmy Martelli.
