Jo Ann Magistro announced her retirement in September.
Jo Ann Magistro Came to the East Brunswick School District in 1971 as a guidance counselor. Since then, she has worked her way through the district to superintendent and seen, what she says, a highly competitive and motivated community come together to create one of the best school systems in the area. “In 1971 this was an extraordinary district with high expectations," she said. “In 2012-2013, it is still an extraordinary district. It’s the culture here. There are high expectations.” Working to meet those expectations while simultaneously evolving to meet current needs has been Magistro’s responsibility since she became superintendent in 2003. East Brunswick boys soccer team defeats South Brunswick, 3-1.
The boys varsity soccer team improved its record to 4-3 this week after it defeated South Brunswick on Thursday by a score of 3-1, and Old Bridge on Saturday by a score of 4-0. Suspects have been charged in the robberies of the Hess Station and Sunoco station, both on Route 18.
This story has been updated to include information on the robberies the three suspects are suspected of committing. The East Brunswick and Old Bridge Police departments have made three arrests following a joint investigation into a string of armed robberies and one burglary of gas stations that occurred in both municipalities between July 30 and Aug. 7. According to police, Nicholas Demo, 19, of Morganville, Joseph Dolce, 21 of Manalapan, and a 16-year-old male accomplice from Manahawkin were charged after an investigation by Detectives Robert Zielinski and Daniel Unkel of the East Brunswick Police Department and Detectives Joseph Gougeon, Michael Blahota and Thomas Montagna of the Old Bridge Police Department. Republican candidates for Township Council Synnove Bakke and Jim Johnson are no longer running in November's election.
Republican candidates for Township Council, Synnove Bakke and Jim Johnson, sent a letter to the township clerk’s office last week asking that their names be removed from the ballot for this year’s election. The husband and wife team had been seeking four-year terms on the council. Bakke said Monday afternoon that the decision was made because of work related reasons. Mayoral candidate Republican Eugene DeMarco is still on the ballot. On the Democrat side, incumbents Nancy Pinkin and Denise Contrino and Mayor David Stahl are still seeking re-election. According to the East Brunswick Township Clerk’s office, the Republicans have until Sept. 13 to name two replacement candidates if they want them to appear on the November ballot. So tell us …
