What do you think about the new Wal-Mart?
Work began this week on the new Wal-Mart, to be located at the old Route 18 flea market. Though there is still a lot of work to be done, much of the parking lot has been ripped up, and a portion of the building along Tices Lane has been demolished. The work is part of a two-phase project that will see a 151,507-square-foot Wal-Mart built on the “Golden Triangle” site, located at the corner of Tices Lane and Route 18 and bordered to the east by the Old Bridge Turnpike. The second phase includes a 400 unit, four-story, 520,678-square-foot apartment complex on land bordered by the Old Bridge Turnpike, Tices Lane. With work finally started, tell Patch what you think? The Summerhill Square restaurant has its grand opening on Tuesday.
It was Monday afternoon, almost a full day before its official opening, but already the new East Brunswick Smashburger was mobbed. The Summerhill Square restaurant held a soft opening Monday, serving up burgers, fries and drinks to invited guests as a way to prepare for its Tuesday grand opening. “We expect to do well here, said Scott Gillman, CEO of Mascot Corporation, owners of all New Jersey Smashburger locations. “We expect it to be our best site.” The East Brunswick Smashburger is the 12th of its kind in New Jersey, and one of the first in Central Jersey. In April, a 13th location will open on Route 1 in North Brunswick. Smashburgers are made of Angus beef, are seared and “smashed” while cooking and seasoned with a secret mixture used…

Express Employment Professionals will be opening their doors in Freehold this spring.
In 2013 a different kind of business will be opening its doors in Freehold amongst the many different dining and shopping establishments. Express Employment Professionals, a staffing agency, has chosen Freehold to be the home of their newest location thanks to franchisee Jim Puliafico of East Brunswick. As a former bra designer, Puliafico has been in the business world for over 30 years. However, recent changes in the industry caused Puliafico to begin looking for a change in career. “I left the fashion industry in July because a lot of the clothing industry in general has gone over seas,” explained Puliafico. “With less opportunity here, I hadn’t really been happy for a number of years, so this was a perfect sign for me to take a break …

Whether you're a beginner or an expert, Zumiez in the Brunswick Square Mall can set you up with the right skateboard.
If your child already has enough video games, then Andrew Dolan has a few ideas on what to get them this Christmas—a skateboard. From beginner boards to more expensive offerings with high-end wheels and performance, Zumiez in the Brunswick Square Mall has a wide selection of skateboards that could end up under Christmas trees everywhere. “We have trick boards or freestyle boards,” said Dolan, who manages the store. But the cool thing is that we have a pretty big price range.” For parents looking to get something fun for their kids, Zumiez has made it easy, with several packages of complete boards (decks, wheels bearings etc.) ranging in price from $89.95 to $115.95. The difference in price, said Dolan, is due to several things, including …

New business set to call Rt. 18 and East Brunswick home.
The Route 18 Shopping Center is going to be home to East Brunswick’s newest business—Karl’s Appliance. Owner Dan Schwartz said the company is renovating two store fronts, the former Gap and a bagel shop, into one larger facility and that it could be open for business sometime in late December or early January, with a Grand Opening set for the spring. A January opening would include strictly merchandise, and once the showroom is completed, much of that merchandise will be on display in a series of cabinets designed to give customers an idea of what it would look like in their homes. According to Larry Pinilis, a real estate agent working for the mall, a 14,000-square-foot restaurant also is slated to move into the center. “We’re taking the…

The restaurant wants to hire kitchen workers, front end help and fill management positions.
Scott Gillman says East Brunswick is a great location for a new Smashburger restaurant. “We’ve always like the area,” said the CEO of Mascot Corporation, owners of all New Jersey Smashburger locations. “We’re always involved with great communities and East Brunswick is a great community, with great kids, great schools and a lot of great families.” The newest Smashburger will be opening in the Summerhill Square on Route 18 in late-January, making it the 12th of its kind in New Jersey. Gillman says surrounding businesses and the community make it a perfect location. “There’s a lot of traffic on Route 18, and it draws people from retail businesses looking for lunch, professional offices, and we have the high school right behind it,” he said…

John Broehl volunteers his employees to help the township clean up after Hurricane Sandy.
There were trees everywhere. They were across roads, on top of homes, in power lines, and on top of cars. For some, it might have been a great chance to make some money, especially for people who specialize in landscaping. But for John Broehl, of Broehl’s Lawn Maintenance, Inc., the destruction left by Hurricane Sandy was a chance to help. “I looked at Sandy as a natural disaster, where people in our town were in true need of assistance, in need of help, and that supersedes anything,” he said. Following the storm, Broehl reached out to Austin Kosik, Coordinator of Emergency Management, and asked how he could help. His offer was quickly accepted, and Broehl volunteered his employees, all equipped with chainsaws, to assist the town in …
