Who Won The Presidential Debate?

Barack Obama and Mitt Romney duked it out in Denver, Colo.

President Barack Obama and Republican candidate Mitt Romney faced off in the first of three presidential debates Wednesday night. The debate was held at the University of Denver in Colorado. President Obama, 51, vying for his second term, was leading by four percentage points in a national poll over challenger Mitt Romney, 65, before the debate. However, political pundits and speculation on Huffington Post questioned whether the debate could change the standings. The candidates are expected to debate each other two more times - once on Oct. 16 and once on Oct. 22. The topics for those debates will be domestic policy on the 16th and foreign policy on the 22nd. Even a small bump from Wednesday night's domestic policy forum could make the …

Three Seek Seats on School Board

Vicki Becker, Meredith Shaw and Kevin McEvoy will run for seats on the East Brunswick Board of Education.

The names of three people who want to serve on the East Brunswick Board of Education will be on the ballot in November. Incumbents Vicki Becker and Meredith Shaw will be seeking three-year seats on the school board as will newcomer Kevin McEvoy. All three filed their applications to run before the Tuesday deadline. Incumbent Susan Karp did not file an application to run again. There are three, three-year seats up for grabs. Normally school board elections are in April, however, in January the board voted to take advantage of new legislation to move elections to November. Under the new rules, a school budget would not go to the voters unless the district was asking to spend over the 2 percent cap. Board members said the move would mean …

Would You have Approved the School Budget?: Here's What You Said.

Patch Readers who took part in a poll last week say they would have approved the 2012-13 school budget if it were put to voters.

When asked if they would approve a 2012-13 school budget if it were put up for a vote this year, Patch readers said YES! On Thursday, March 22, the Board of Education approved a $131,176,099 school budget. The 2012-13 spending plan calls for $110,437,402 to be raised by taxes and carries a tax rate increase of 10 cents per $100 of assessed valuation. Under that rate, the owner of a home assessed at the township average of $100,000 can expect to pay an additional $100 in school taxes next year. In February, the school board voted to move school elections to the General Election in November. Under the new rules, school budgets would go to voters only if the district requests a spending increase of more than 2 percent. This year’s proposal …

(POLL) Would You Have Approved the 2012-13 School Budget?

Spending plan in place for upcoming school year. Would you have approved the budget if there was a school election this year?

The Board of Education approved a $131,176,099 school budget Thursday after just one resident talked about the plan. Once it was approved by the school board Thursday, the document became the official budget for the 2012-13 school year. In February, the school board voted to move school elections to the General Election in November. Christie: 'Now Is Not My Time'

Governor says he will not be a candidate for GOP presidential nomination.

Saying that "now is not my time," New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie announced Tuesday that he will not seek the Republican nomination for president in 2012. Standing behind a lecturn in the Statehouse in Trenton, Christie said he believed he owed it to the people of New Jersey to continue as governor. "It's never felt right... to me in my gut to leave here when the job is not finished," he said. "New Jersey, whether you like it or not, you're stuck with me." But Christie did not rule out a run for the presidency in the future, telling an NBC News reporter that "I'm not going to preclude any job whether president or working at NBC." The governor had repeatedly said he would not join the GOP campaign, but reports continued to surface in recent …

Joe R is correct about top executives and CEOs. But the problem is more nuanced than he presented. The executives are both republicans and democrats; and the are executives of both private sector and public sector organizations. Let's just recap a few of the winners and losers in the recent recession: • Public sector union jobs increased. Private sector union members lost hundreds of thousands of…   more ›

School Board Candidates: Meet Laurie Lachs

Laurie Lachs is seeking re-election to the East Brunswick Board of Education.

Welcome to East Brunswick Patch’s 2011 School Board Election Coverage. Each day this week we will present information on one of four candidates seeking a three-year seat on the school board. School elections will be held Wednesday, April 27. On the ballot for school board will be incumbents Laurie Lachs, Todd Simmens and Katie Spiegler, who are seeking re-election, and Andrew Baharlias, who is hoping to win a seat for the first time. Voters also will get their say on the district’s $128 million spending plan that calls for eliminating 25 full time teachers. The budget carries a $108,924,563 school tax levy and calls for a school tax rate increase of 9.88 cents per $100 of assessed valuation. That means the owner of a home assessed at $100,…
