Not Just for Kids: Get a Workout at East Brunswick Playgrounds

Playground fun doesn’t have to be reserved for kids. Adults can enjoy these outdoor play spaces too—and get a great workout at the same time.

Getting a good workout doesn’t require being stuck in a gym during the late summer heat or those deliciously crisp fall days that follow. To change things up a bit in your workout routine, consider making use of a free and easily accessible resource: your local playground.     While playgrounds themselves are nothing new, in recent years, adults are returning to them in greater numbers—and not just to entertain their kids. Thanks to the rise in popularity of outdoor boot camps, which often make use of equipment available in parks and playgrounds, many adults are taking a second look at playgrounds as an affordable way to exercise their inner child and outer adult—and make exercising seem less like a chore and more (dare we say it?) fun. …

Personal Trainers Offer Tips For 2012

For those aiming to shape up in the gym for the new year, East Brunswick trainers dole out tips

With New Year's resolutions in full force, Retro Fitness General Manager Brian Caruso said he always sees more members on the treadmills this time of year. “That's when a lot of people start working out,” Caruso added. If you're looking to step up your fitness level in 2012, East Brunswick personal trainers suggest you consistently switch up your routine and don't focus on just one type of exercise. Many people who enter the gym to lose weight head straight for the treadmill—but cardiovascular training is not the be-all-end-all of weight loss, Dennis Akins said, personal trainer at New York Sports Club. “People think if they (only) do cardio, they'll lose the weight. That's not true,” he said. Instead gym-goers might want to focus on …

Are Your Kids Getting Enough Exercise?

Study reveals unhealthy habits among American children.

When I was a kid, getting enough exercise wasn’t difficult. Our parents simply opened our doors everyday and let us play with other kids on the block. We did everything from climbing trees, to riding bikes to playing tag. But these days, if you look outside, it’s rare to see children playing outdoors. That’s because parents are less likely to let a child play outside unsupervised, and because children just don’t casually play with neighborhood kids anymore – “playdates” have to be arranged beforehand with the help of a parent. It looks like our modern-day habits and busy schedules are taking a toll on our kids. A recently released YMCA study reveals that 74 percent of parents say that their children get less than an hour of moderate to …

House and Home: Exercise on TV

On Demand fitness cable programs are a good option for working moms

As a working mom, I sometimes find it hard to fit exercise into my schedule. And with the economy these days, I don’t want to spend extra money on an exercise class, gym membership or personal trainer. I found a great solution to fitting fitness into my day. While browsing the “On Demand” television programs offered by my cable provider, Comcast, I found a section of offerings called “Exercise TV,” which includes a variety of fitness, sports and exercise programs. Among those programs are several fitness videos, which I can choose to watch and exercise to at any time of the day – when my schedule allows it. Most of the routines require very little equipment, which will keep costs down to a minimum. The below programs are great exercise …
