The boys varsity basketball team will face St. Joseph's at the RAC tonight for the county title.
Get ready Bears fans! Your East Brunswick Boys Varsity Basketball team is heading to the RAC to play St. Joseph’s for the GMC title tonight (Friday, Feb. 22) at 8 p.m. The 22 and 2 Bears beat Woodbridge 76 to 31 to earn the berth, according to GMChoops.com. Before that, the Bears defeated Sayreville 69 – 37 in the Quarterfinals, and Perth Amboy 80 to 34 in the first round. South Plainfield may have won the Greater Middlesex Conference wrestling team competition, but East Brunswick was well represented. According to Mycentraljsersey.com, the Bears placed 7th in team competition, with 103, and sent two wrestlers to the finals. Jonathan Schleifer took the 160 pound crown with a 23-8 technical fall win over Inan Sikel of South Plainfield, and Sean Glasgow finished second in the 132 pound weight class after being pinned by Scott DelVecchio of South Plainfield, according to mycentraljersey.com. The Churchill Junior High School freshman boys basketball team are kings of the court! The squad defeated top seeded North Brunswick 57-53 to capture the Greater Middlesex County Conference Tournament, according to GMC Hoops Blogosphere. According to the web site, the Bears were led to victory by guard John McHenry, and forward Nick Fudali while the Raiders were paced by Kishnan Patel in defeat. After capturing the GMC championship, the winter track is set for the states.
It’s obvious almost as soon as you see him on the fields at the East Brunswick High School—winter track coach Kevin McEvoy is excited. “It’s exciting, going out this way,” said McEvoy who, after 35 years, is set to retire in the spring. McEvoy is having one of the greatest runs in boys EBHS track history. The team recently won the GMC championship and is getting ready for a run at a state championship, less than a year after he lead the spring team to a state championship. “We know all of our times, and we know our competition's best times,” he said. “If our kids do what they’re supposed to do, we win. Does that always happen? Rarely.” But McEvoy has optimism on his side, and that’s not because his kids may or may not have better times. …
