POLL: Do Charter Schools Have a Lasting Place in Middlesex County?

How have charter schools affected Middlesex County?

Middlesex County has a selection of charter schools currently operating, including Greater Brunswick Charter School in New Brunswick, Academy for Urban Leadership Charter School in Perth Amboy, and East Brunswick's Hatikvah International Academy Charter School. Hatikvah, a Hebrew dual-language school, has been renting space behind the Trinity Presbyterian Church on Cranbury Road since it opened in 2010. Before it opened its doors it met resistance from the school district. But in 2011, a decision by the State Superior Court Appellate Division put the issue to rest by saying that the district's final appeal, which was based on enrollment, didn't hold up. Located in two trailers, the school has recently had trouble with a growing enrollment…

Council Overturns Hatikvah Variance

A variance that would have allowed the school to renovate a warehouse into a new school was overturned by the Township Council, Monday.

The Township Council reversed a zoning board decision Monday that would have allowed the Hatikvah International Academy Charter School to open a school in a planned industrial area of the township. Before making its decision, council members said they were concerned about safety and with upholding current zoning and the Master Plan.  “This has never been anything more than a land use issue for us and I am extremely confident that no member of this governing body has ever approached it in a way other than that,” said Council President James Wendell. “That being said, in regard to the land use, I feel that towns have zones for a reason and I do not see that this should be a permitted use for this zone.” The Zoning Board of Adjustment …

POLL: What Should the Council Do With Hatikvah?

The Township Council will continue hearing testimony Monday, at 8 p.m.

The Township Council will continue hearing testimony Monday, at 8 p.m., regarding an appeal to a variance granted to the Hatikvah International Academy Charter School. The variance allows the school to renovate a warehouse into a new school. In December, the council heard testimony regarding the challenge. At the time, some council members said they are leaning toward asking the Zoning Board of Adjustment to review the variance. The variance was granted unanimously in July by the Zoning Board of Adjustment and allows the school to renovate a warehouse into a school. The building, 7 Lexington Ave., is located in a planned industrial zone and a variance is needed to open a school in the zone. The warehouse is surrounded by similar warehouses…

EB BOE and Magistro cut programs, Elementary language and start charging for clubs, sports and activities long before Hatikvah was in existance. EB enrollment has dropped more than 700 students in the past 5 years. EB BOE should spend more time trying to get our schools back in the top 100 instead of wasteing taxpayers money on lawyers fighting a losing battle. Hatikval is not going anywhere.   more ›

Residents Appeal Hatikvah Decision

Two residents have appealed a July decision that allows the charter school to renovate a warehouse into a new school.

Two East Brunswick residents are appealing a decision to grant the Hatikvah School International Academy Charter School a variance to renovate a warehouse into a school building. Deborah E. Cornavaca and Christine Rampolla filed an appeal on Aug. 20 that states, among other reasons, the variance should not have been granted because “there was a conflict of interest,” and that “the board did not permit a complete record to be made.” In July, the Zoning Board of Adjustment unanimously approved a variance that will allow Hatikvah to renovate the warehouse into a school. The building, 7 Lexington Ave., is located in a planned industrial zone and a variance is needed to open a school in the zone. The warehouse is surrounded by similar …

The "Pro-Charter" sector will use their standard argument that charter schools provide "quality education" in needy communities, and give a chance that every child, regardless of race, income, etc., can succeed. First, I can't really classify East Brunswick as a "needy community". Second, in those communities, every child is NOT accounted for in the charter "system" due to the exclusive nature of…   more ›

Hatikvah deceivingly presents itself as an organic, homespun school founded by and run by local residents. Why is it that they need a pricey, high paid king-of-spin type to pedal their lies?
