Celebrating the Holidays

Lights celebrating Hanukkah and Christmas are on display at the municipal complex.

East Brunswick is celebrating the holidays with a light show of its own. On Saturday, the first day of Hanukkah, the township's Menorah was lit up. The township Christmas tree was turned on at the same time. Stop by and take a look at both, on display at the municipal pond next to the Municipal Building. Follow Patch on Facebook. Police Offer Holiday Safety Tips

The East Brunswick police have some tips on how to shop safely and how to keep your home secure.

So there you are, weighed down by a giant bag of electronics in one hand, and an even bigger bag of toys in the other. But you’re not done, and absent a third arm, you have to get rid of some of your purchases to make room for the next round, so it’s off to the car, where hopefully, they will be safe. But fear not. With just a few common sense precautions can make that trek to your car a little safer for you, your purchases, and your loved ones. “Biggest tip is do not leave packages (or even GPS/radar detectors/cell phones) in plain sight inside the vehicle. Put them in the trunk,” said Patrolman Drew Walsh.  “Thieves like to window shop too and this is just an invitation to have your car broken into.  Officer Walsh said that, if possible…

Bowne-Munro Students Lift the Spirits of Troops

Bowne-Munro students created cards to be sent to U.S. Troops.

Students at Bowne-Munro got the holiday season started by sharing the joy with American troops. Students in the school's art classes created cards for the Holiday Mail for Heroes program and sent them out to lift the spirits of those who need it. "To kick-off the holiday season, Bowne-Munro's art classes created festive cards as part of the Red Cross 'Holiday Mail for Heroes' program. The cards are being forwarded to our troops to serve as small pick-me-ups and tokens of our appreciation for those that aren't able to spend the holidays with their loved ones," said art techer Lisa Gombas.

Stepping Up For Those in Need

Donations helped provide a record number of families for Thanksgiving.

Just a few short days ago, the East Brunswick annual Holiday Food Drive and Gift Basket Program was in desperate need. With a record number of families in need—146, plus an additional 16 seniors and others—organizers of the annual food drive were wondering where the food would come from. But as usual, the generosity of East Brunswick residents came through. “Once again people stepped up and helped us provide food and gift cards for 146 East Brunswick families and 16 seniors and others who are in need,” said Recreation Supervisor Karen Kesckes. “A huge thank you to all those generous individuals, Scouts, groups and organizations! We are now concentrating on the December holidays and families can either be adopted or the donation of gift …

Wild Turkey Ways

This bird deserves attention beyond its starring role on the holiday table.

As Thanksgiving approaches, turkey may be on your mind. The Butterball on your table might seem like a far cry from the wild birds we sometimes spot stalking through the pines, but they actually belong to the same species – one with some interesting characteristics and a long history with humans. What it is: The wild turkeys that roam our forests and farmlands belong to one of several subspecies found all over the U.S. Our eastern wild turkeys are big birds – males can grow to 4 feet and may weigh more than 20 pounds. The females, or hens, are smaller and slimmer, with relatively dull brown and gray feathers. The male’s plumage is bulkier, with feathers that can contain iridescent shades of purple, green and gold. In the spring, his naked…
