School District, Township CFO Disagree on School Tax Rate

Business Administrator Bernardo Giuliana says the tax rate was not misrepresented at the budget hearing on March 19.

Despite conflicting reports on the coming year school budget, the owner of a home in East Brunswick assessed at $200,000 can expect to pay $263 more in school taxes this coming school year, district officials say. For the 2013-14 school year, the East Brunswick School District is proposing a $134 million school budget supported by a $113 million tax levy. Business administrator Bernardo Giuliana said the district tax rate will increase 13 cents from $6.09 to $6.22 per $100 of assessed valuation in the township.  "For 2013-2014, the net tax levy increase is $2,547,334 (General and Debt Service Funds combined), which translates into a 13.17-cent tax rate increase," he said. "These are as reflected in the actual budget that was adopted." …

East Brunswick Tax Bills Above the State Average

The township also saw one of the lowest tax rate hikes in the state, according to Star-Ledger analysis

East Brunswick's overall tax bills remain above the state average, but it's 2012 increase was among the lowest. The township's 2012 tax hike was 0.8 percent, below the state average increase of 1.7 percent, and well short of the highest increase, 78.8 percent, in Washington Township in Warren County, according to a Star-Ledger analysis. The average Municipal tax bill was $1,733.38 in 2012, below the state average of $2,324.66, to the report. The average school tax bill in East Brunswick was $5,764.01, above the state average school tax bill of $4,120.16, according to the report. Municipal Taxes Down From last Year

A public hearing on the $55.865 2012 municipal budget will be held on Monday, May 21.

Residents will get their say on a $55.865 million municipal budget that calls for an 4.3 percent decrease in municipal taxes during a public hearing at 8 p.m., Monday, May 21. The spending plan calls for a municipal tax rate of $1.806 per $100 of assessed valuation. Under that rate, the owner of a home assessed at $100,000 can expect to pay $1,806 in municipal taxes, down from $1,843 paid by the average home owner last year. The budget is $547,078 less than last year’s $56.412 million spending plan, with the biggest cut in spending coming in salaries and wages, down by $663,136 to $19.704 million.
