Sunday is officially Veterans Day, a time to recognize and honor those who have served in our nation’s military. Have you thanked the veterans you know? This year, since Veterans Day falls on a weekend, it will be officially commemorated Monday, Nov. 12. The Treaty of Versailles, which ended World War I, took effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. The Veterans Day Observance will be Sunday at the Senior Center
East Brunswick will hold its Veterans Day Observance on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 6 p.m. in the East Brunswick Senior Center. Leading the 45 minute program will be Mayor David Stahl. Taking part in the program, John O’Keefe will play the bagpipes; John Marmion, Chaplain of VFW Post No. 133 will deliver the Invocation and play TAPS; Rabbi Aryeh Goodman of the East Brunswick Chabad will deliver the Benediction; Tom Coohill, Commander of VFW Post No. 133 will lead the Pledge of Allegiance. East Brunswick held its annual Veterans Day ceremonies Friday. The event included a wreath laying, dedication of memorial pavers and guest speaker Randi Cairns of Home Front Hearts. Following the ceremony, there was a patriotic sing-along, trivia contests and door prizes. Festivities continued at the Senior Center. The event was hosted by East Brunswick and the East Brunswick Veterans Alliance, AmVets Post No. 34, Jewish War Veterans Post No. 311, VFW Post No. 133, Vietnam Veterans of America, and the American Merchant Marines. The event wa sponsored by the Recreation and Parks and Human Relations Department.

To the Editor: On this Veterans Day, we extend our thanks as a grateful nation to the men and women who have defended our freedom. Each of the 22 million American veterans has a unique and extraordinary story. Today, I’d like to share one story about a remarkable veteran in our community. Carl DeAngelis joined the Army in September of 1942, at the height of the Second World War. His training was a time of great sorrow: his mother died shortly after his enlistment, and Carl’s service prevented him from attending his funeral. Yet it was also a time of surprising joys.
