Local Wrestler Keeps on Winning

Wrestlers Move On to States

The East Brunswick Bears is sending three wrestlers to the state tournament, scheduled for Friday.

East Brunswick is sending three wrestlers to the State Championships in Atlantic City. Following this weekend’s Region 5 championships, the Bears saw two champions and one second place finisher. Sean Glasgow won at 132 pounds with a 7-6 decision; Jonathan Schleifer won at 160 with a 13-0 win, and Michael Quintin took second at 220 pounds following a close 2-1 decision This is Schleifer’s third Regional title, making him the winningest wrestler in EBHS history. The first round of the states are March 8.

Bears Come Up Big at District 20 Tournament

The EBHS Bears has four District champions following Saturday's tournament.

The East Brunswick Varsity Wrestling Team came out on top Saturday during the District 20 Championships. Held at Churchill Junior High School, the grapplers took first as a team and saw four of its own win championships. As a team, the squad scored 161 points, topping Monroe’s 150 points, according to www.nj.com. For the bears, Sean Glasgow won the 132 pound title with a pin in 37 seconds, Mike Nicolaro won the 138 crown with a 5-1 decision, Jonathan Schleifer won the 160 title with a pin in 39 seconds, , and Michael Quintin won at 220 pounds with a 3-2 decision, according to nj.com. In addition, Eric Webber took third at 126 pounds, Patrick Dougherty at 145 pounds and Oliver Piuri at 285.

Matmen Have Strong Showing at GMCs

South Plainfield may have won the Greater Middlesex Conference wrestling team competition, but East Brunswick was well represented. According to Mycentraljsersey.com, the Bears placed 7th in team competition, with 103, and sent two wrestlers to the finals. Jonathan Schleifer took the 160 pound crown with a 23-8 technical fall win over Inan Sikel of South Plainfield, and Sean Glasgow finished second in the 132 pound weight class after being pinned by Scott DelVecchio of South Plainfield, according to mycentraljersey.com.  In third place was Mike Quintin in the 220 class. NJSIAA Moves Dates for State Wrestling Tournaments

A move by the NJSIAA to add a week to the dual meet season in wrestling has pushed back both the 2013 state team and individual tournaments. Since 2004, the Toms River Regional district has hosted the state team group championships and the Region VI event at Pine Belt Arena. The dates are usually booked well in advance, with the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association setting the following year’s tournament schedule even as the current tournament is finishing. But a complicated series of events that led to the state individual championships being set for the second weekend in March created a problem: As scheduled, the tournament calendar would now have a 13-day gap between the region tournament and the state finals, a gap …

Wrestlers Excel at NHSCA Tournament

John Schleifer and Sean Glasgow had a great NHSCA tournament.

John Schleifer won the prestigious NHSCA High School National Sophomore championships earlier this month. Crowned the top Sophomore in the country at 160 weight class, he beat two state and national champions en route to the championships. Sean Glasgow came in 5th in the country among freshman (All American) in the same event at 132 weight class.

Barbies, Pull Ups and a State Championship (VIDEO)

Seven-year-old Stephanie Yarnall won the Girl's State Championship this season.

The East Brunswick Wrestling Club has a tradition of sending its athletes to the top. This year alone a several wrestlers finished high or won tournaments throughout the season, including nine kids who qualified for the NJ Kid's State Championship and one young lady who qualified for the NJ Girl's State Championship. When the tournaments were over, it was 7-year-old Stephanie Yarnall who became the club’s first state champion, winning the New Jersey Girl’s State Championship. “Stephanie really enjoys the sport, her coaches, her teammates and especially when people that don’t know her come up to her to congratulate her. Two Wrestlers Move to State Competition

The Bears squad put in a strong showing in this year's regional tournament.

Two East Brunswick wrestlers qualified for the state tournament after placing in regional competition this weekend. Sophomore John Schliefer took first place while Greg Krueger, a senior, took third. Rounding out the strong showing were Mike Quinton, a sophomore, and Sean Glasgow, a freshman, who took fourth. “The kids did a great job during the region tournament. Wrestlers Head to Regionals

Three grapplers qualified on Wednesday and will join several teammates this weekend at Hunterdon Central.

The East Brunswick Bears wrestling team geared up for the first round of Regionals last evening at Hunterdon Central Regional High School and did very well, with grapplers moving on to compete in next round today (Friday). The Bears, led by Head Coach Matt Pazinko and Assistant Coach Christopher Yannazzo, had six of nine students participating in regionals fighting Wednesday night to make it to the next round. Freshman Sean Glasgow won by Major Decision (17-5) over Robert Marcantonio from Metuchen. Junior Mice Nicolaro beat Leonard Bird from Montgomery by decision (4-1). Strong Showing for East Brunswick Mat-Men

Bears take fourth as a team and get three titles during Bears Invitational Wrestling Tournament.

The Bears took fourth in this year’s Bears Invitational Wrestling Tournament, held at Churchill Junior High School last week. According to www.mycentraljersey.com, the Bears finished with 147.5 points—behind Bishop Ahr, 174; Governor Livingston 171.5; and Lacey Township with 150.5—and had three finalists. Freshman Sean Glasgow defeated Perth Amboy’s Humberto Argueta in an 8-5 decision for the 126-pound title, Jonathan Schleifer pinned Highland Park’s John Unger to capture the 152-pound title and Michael O’Kane defeated John Dean of Bishop Ahr in a 3-0 decision for the 160-pound championship.
