The Irwin School PTA invites fashionistas to come play Designer Bag Bingo at 7:30 p.m. May 17 at Churchill Junior High School, 18 Norton Road. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and games will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 and include three bingo boards to be played over the course of eight games, according to a press release from the school district. Applications for the 2013-2014 East Brunswick High School Bears and Cubs Preschool Program are now available online at www.ebnet.org/preschool, in the main office at East Brunswick High School located at 380 Cranbury Road and at the receptionist desk of the administration building at 760 Route 18. Free to East Brunswick residents, the Bears and Cubs Preschool is an elective for high school juniors and seniors interested in a career in education. Trees are key in East Brunswick. Memorial School welcomed city officials and community members to an Arbor Day celebration on Thursday that celebrated East Brunswick's 35th designation as a "Tree City USA." Towns that are named a "Tree City USA' are identified by the National Arbor Day Foundation for having a city tree ordinance, a legal tree governing body, a comprehensive urban forestry program and observance of Arbor Day. "Trees are so important for our communities and our environment," said Bill Hlubik of the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County. Despite conflicting reports on the coming year school budget, the owner of a home in East Brunswick assessed at $200,000 can expect to pay $263 more in school taxes this coming school year, district officials say. For the 2013-14 school year, the East Brunswick School District is proposing a $134 million school budget supported by a $113 million tax levy. Business administrator Bernardo Giuliana said the district tax rate will increase 13 cents from $6.09 to $6.22 per $100 of assessed valuation in the township. "For 2013-2014, the net tax levy increase is $2,547,334 (General and Debt Service Funds combined), which translates into a 13.17-cent tax rate increase," he said. School officials said the tax rate would increase 13 cents for the coming school year while the township says the rate will actually go up 22 cents.
An increase in school taxes was misreported by district officials earlier this month, according to a report in the East Brunswick Sentinel. According to the report, at a March 19 budget hearing, school business administrator Bernardo Giuliana said the tax rate for the 2013-14 school budget would increase 13 cents from $6.09 to $6.22 per $100 of assessed valuation in the township. Lou Neely, Chief Financial Officer for the township, told the Sentinel that the tax rate will actually increase 22 cents to $6.31 per $100 of assessed valuation. The 22 cent increase will result in East Brunswick taxpayers with a home assessed at $200,000 seeing an increase of $440 for a total of $12,620 in school taxes for the year, according to the report. The East Brunswick Public Schools Quarterback Club is accepting orders for its annual Mother’s Day plant sale. Flats of 48 plantings are $11.50 each with additional discounts available when ordering items valued at $50 or more, according to a press release from the school district. Annual flowers, hanging baskets, patio pots, vegetable plants and herbs are available. Orders must be placed by April 12, and will be available for pickup on May 10 between the hours of 2-3 p.m. and 5-6 p.m. at East Brunswick High school. The East Brunswick School Board has approved a $134 million budget.
The township school district has proposed a number of construction improvement projects, new teacher positions and technology upgrades in the 2013-14 school budget. The $134 million budget will be supported by a $113.2 million tax levy. East Brunswick homeowners will see the school tax rate increase 13 cents from $6.09 to $6.22 for the 2013-14 school year, according to a report in the East Brunswick Sentinel. Tickets are currently on sale for the Central Elementary School PTA's Tricky Tray, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 12 at East Brunswick High School, 380 Cranbury Road. Admission is $10 per person, and includes a door prize ticket and coffee, tea and dessert. Tickets for the raffle are available in advance for $35 per pack, which also includes six tickets for a 50/50 drawing. They will not be sold the night of the event, according to a release from the school district. Admission to the event is limited to those who are 18 years of age and older.
