Menendez Overtakes Kyrillos to Retain Senate Seat

Republicans have conceded the senatorial seat to incumbent Robert Menendez.

As the ballots pour in from Sandy-ravaged New Jersey, Robert Menendez has emerged victorious in reclaiming his U.S. Senate seat against Republican challenger Joe Kyrillos. With just over half of polling districts reporting, state Republicans have conceded victory to Menendez. The U.S. senator leads 58 percent to 40 percent as of 10:30 p.m., according to CBS News. "Senator Joe Kyrillos ran a great campaign against very tough circumstances and despite the loss, his family, campaign team, and supporters should be very proud of their efforts," New Jersey Republican Chairman Sam Raia said in a statement late Tuesday night. New Jersey voters won’t just be choosing the next president on Election Day—the state has two questions on the ballot that could have an impact on your wallet. The referendum questions deal with extra funding for colleges’ infrastructure and benefits payments for judges. The public questions are: #1: Do you approve the “Building Our Future Bond Act”? This bond act authorizes the State to issue bonds in the aggregate principal amount of $750 million to provide matching grants to New Jersey’s colleges and universities. NJ Insiders Split Along Party Lines After Final Debate

Some 89 percent of Democrats gave Obama the debate win, while Republicans declared Romney the winner by the same margin.

New Jersey political insiders gave their candidates the edge on the final presidential debate. However, most believe President Barack Obama will be the consensus winner over Mitt Romney among national media outlets. According to a Patch flash poll sent to elected officials and political party insiders in New Jersey, 17 out of 19 Democrats responding believed Obama was the victor, while 16 out of 18 Republicans declared Romney the winner. “Gov. New Jersey political insiders declared their party’s candidate the winner of the second presidential debate Tuesday night. However, most believe President Barack Obama will be the consensus winner among national media outlets over Mitt Romney. Presidential debate a 'disaster' for Obama, one Democrat says as both parties agree GOP challenger wins Round 1.

New Jersey political insiders agreed: Mitt Romney won Round 1 against President Barack Obama. According to a Patch flash poll immediately following Wednesday night's presidential debate in Denver, Colo., 63 percent of both Democratic and Republican respondents believed Romney was victorious. The statewide conference of NAACP chapters met last weekend in East Brunswick. This year's national theme for the organization is "Your Power, Your Decision - Vote."

While politicians run their campaigns to garner votes for November, action groups around the country are working to enable people to be able to cast those votes. In light of the election year, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has chosen a voter awareness theme for their annual campaign: "Your Power, Your Decision—Vote." And at the recently statewide conference of NAACP chapters in New Jersey, held lat week in East Brunswick, voter awareness and advocacy was a major topic of conversation.
