Get some great soccer training from East Brunswick’s own Heather O’Reilly. Fresh off a series of International Friendlies against the top teams in the world, and with a brand new Olympic Gold Medal in her pocket (her third), O’Reilly will once again hold her annual Holiday Hometown Clinic, this time in Monroe. The clinic will be held Sunday, Dec. 23, for girls age 7 to 18, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Monroe 33 Sports Center, 4 Farrington Boulevard, Monroe, N.J. Bring your own soccer ball, cleats, shin guards, water and snacks if you want them. All clinics will be led by Heather, along with other trainers. The US Women's Soccer team won the Gold Medal today after defeating Japan 2-1. The team was led by Carli Lloyd, who scored to goals, and more than a few dramatic saves by goalkeeper Hope Solo. The win is the USWNT's third straight gold medal and fourth overall. For a complete recap read the NBC Olympics coverage.

Local girl makes good in the Olympics with an assist.
East Brunswick’s Heather O’Reilly came up big yesterday in the Olympic Quarterfinal vs. Canada. The midfielder came on as a replacement and fed Alex Morgan a long cross. Morgan scored on a header at the 123rd minute, giving the team a 4-3 win. The Olympians move on to the Gold Medal match in Wembley Stadium, Thursday against Japan. It’s a rematch from last year’s World Cup final, when the U.S. lost to Japan on Penalty kicks.

The following is a letter from East Brunswick resident Phil Peterson. Peterson, who used to coach Heather O’Reilly during her East Brunswick Soccer Club days, is traveling in Great Britain with the O’Reilly clan to watch Heather play in the 2012 games. When I last left you, the U.S. Women's soccer team had finished off their unblemished record in their group. After the match at Old Trafford in Manchester, we went for some dinner and then to the team hotel for a little while. Everyone was pretty tired from a long day, so after a short visit we headed back to prepare for the Wednesday morning train trip to Newcastle (site of the quarterfinal, where the team plays against Canada at 2:45 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6). I'm squeezing this in, before we walk up to St. James Park here in Newcastle for the quarterfinal match vs New Zealand. (Played Friday, Aug. 3). After a win on Tuesday, the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team has two days off before facing off against New Zealand Friday in the next round of the 2012 London Olympics. Abby Wambach scored the team’s lone goal Tuesday, leading the squad to a narrow 1-0 victory DPR Korea. It was Heather O’Reilly’s second start of the 2012 games, after coming off the bench in last week’s 4-2 win over France. U.S. Women's National Team goalkeeper Hope Solo caused a stir this weekend after criticizing U.S. soccer legend Brandi Chastain. Chastain was doing the commentary for the team’s second Olympic game against Columbia (they won 3-0) when she allegedly criticized the team’s defense.
