Brunswick Memorial Home Honors the Fallen

Flags representing each soldier who has died in Iraq and Afghanistan adorn the Cranbury Road property.

One flag normally flies tall above the landscaping at in East Brunswick.  A staple of the property throughout its nearly 30 years in business, that flag is no longer alone.  Beginning the Wednesday, “Old Glory” was be accompanied by 133 other flags, proudly saluting the heroes who defend the United States of America.

The funeral home, which supports and participates in many area events supporting both Veterans and current Armed Forces members, has decorated the entire length of its Cranbury Road property line with the red, white, and blue.  Each flag that Brunswick Memorial Home’s team planted symbolizes the life lost by one of the brave men and women who lost their lives in Iraq or Afghanistan with ties to New Jersey.

When you think of a funeral home, however, thoughts of politics are not something that typically come to mind and that is just the way Brunswick Memorial Home wants it to remain.

“This is not about Democrat or Republican, whether you think we should be over there or not,” stated Business Manager Brian Kulbacki.  “These flags represent those who have sacrificed everything, but there are countless others still fighting.  These men and women, and the families of both, deserve our support and this is just a little token of our appreciation.”

One Hundred and Thirty-Three flags adorn the property; a number that the funeral home regretfully admits has increased since Veteran’s Day in 2010 when it last had done this.  Along with the flags, the funeral home has made its message a little blunter, posting two large signs featuring the American Flag, State of New Jersey, and the message “Honoring Our Heroes.”

Brunswick Memorial Home is also an official drop-off point for Cell Phones for Soldiers, through which people can donate cell phones they are no longer using to the U.S. Armed Forces.  The group recycles the phones, no matter what condition, and provides military men and women with the ability to talk to the loved ones they are separated from through prepaid calling minutes.
