Video Shows Near Miss at Tices Lane and Route 18

Traffic camera was installed in March and started recording traffic in April.

American Traffic Solutions released a You Tube video last month that shows footage of drivers running red lights at intersections where traffic cameras are installed, including a near miss at Route 18 and Tices lane in East Brunswick.

.

According to a report by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, between 2004 and 2008, road safety cameras saved 159 lives in 14 U.S. cities with large populations and could have prevented 815 deaths had all large cities in the country used the cameras.

“Each year hundreds are killed and more than 100,000 are injured nationwide in red-light running related collisions, said Kate Coulson, manager of Communications and Outreach for ATS, in a press release. “In 2009, 11 were killed in red-light running related collisions in New Jersey.  Red-light safety cameras change driver behavior and help save lives.  The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety estimates that over time, cities using cameras see a 24 percent reduction in red-light running related fatalities. “

The program is administered by ATS with each violation reviewed and approved by the East Brunswick Police Department prior to being issued.
