Township Food Drive is in Desperate Need

The township has 140 families and at least 16 seniors who have indicated they need help this holiday season. That number could grow.

The East Brunswick annual Holiday Food Drive and Gift Basket Program may be getting close to setting a record, but not a good one.

The drive, which invites people, groups and organizations to adopt needy families in East Brunswick and provide with them with enough food for a holiday meal, presents and possibly more, has a record number of families in need.

Today, there is a list of 140 families, plus an additional 16 seniors and others that the township is aware of that need help al seeking help. Unfortunately, the number of people willing to help is decreasing.

“While the numbers of those seeking help are up, the number of adopters is down – not surprising given the state of the economy,” said Karen Kecskes, of the township recreation, parks and Community Services Department.

Kecskes is urging that anyone who can help make a donation of a gift card to a supermarket, or of non-perishable goods.
