UPDATED: Senior Center, Hammarskjold Declared Shelters; Cars Off Roads By 10 p.m.

Mayor David Stahl has declared a state of emergency for East Brunswick.

Mayor David Stahl announced that there will be a pet friendly shelter opening at the  (2 Walling Civic Center Drive) at 10 p.m. No anmals are allowed at Hammarskjold.

In addition, roads in East Brunswick will be closed as of 10 p.m. tonight (Saturday, Aug. 27) as a precaution.

Mayor Stahl said Hurricane Irene, which has yet to fully reach the area, will cause flooding in areas of East Brunswick and those residents who have been asked to leave their homes can head to the middle school where there are supplies and emergency generators as well as township and school district employees.

Mayor Stahl said residents along the South River have been asked to evacuate due to expected flooding. People in that area can see storm surges of four to eight feet at 8:30 a.m., or high tide, which will result in flooding, he said.
