Police: Pedestrian Safety a Priority

The East Brunswick Police Department is conducting a pedestrian safety campaign targeting drivers and pedestrians who disregard road rules.

Eleven motor vehicle accidents involving pedestrians have happened in East Brunswick so far this year, one of which resulted in the death of an elderly man crossing Route 18, and police say they have launched a pedestrian safety campaign to curb further instances.

According to a Nixle alert from the East Brunswick Police Department, a pedestrian safety campaign started in late May to target drivers who speed, disregard traffic signals, or fail to stop to pedestrians in crosswalks.

Pedestrians who cross outside of the crosswalk or against signals are also included.

"Enforcement locations" will be set up around East Brunswick and plainclothes officers will also be watching for violators, according to the alert.
