Armed Robbery Report turns into Arrest for False Police Report

A South River man lied to police about being robbed.

A South River man told police that his wallet containing $900 was stolen, but later told police the truth - he simply lost it.

According to police, Glauco Cardoso, 26, reported at 7:44 a.m. that he was walking down Parker Street when two people jumped out from behind a car, told him they had a gun and demanded his wallet, which contained the $900.

As officers searched the area, detectives canvassed the neighborhood and spoke to residents who said they didn’t see or hear anything. Soon after, Cardoso told Detective Jason Haykel that he lied about there being two suspects and that the robbery actually occurred a few blocks away, on Highland Street. The reason he lied, he said, was because he didn’t think anyone would believe that he had been robbed by just one person.

However, Cardoso later told police that he made up the entire storey, admitting that he lied because he had a court appointment later that day and had lost his wallet, which contained the money needed for his fines.

Cardoso released on his own recognizance.
