East Brunswick Students in a Giving Mood

Food drives, toy drives and the spirit of giving are taking over local schools.

East Brunswick school communities have been doing their share this holiday season to spread some cheer and to help those who need a hand.

At the Student Council collected non-perishable foods and the staff donated perishable food for complete dinners to be given to families need. For December, art classes participated in the , the Student Council is collecting new hats, gloves and scarves for families in need, and the staff is donating clothes and toys for families of the Bowne-Munro community.

At , the Student Council and nurse collected food to complete full Thanksgiving dinners for seven needy families in East Brunswick. For the December holidays, The PTA has organized “Coins for Kids,” which encourages students to donate lose change in order to buy gifts for needy Central School families.

For Thanksgiving, the adopted six families for the Student Council to provide food for, and the PTA adopted an additional family. For December, Chittick staff will be adopting six families, and the Student Council will hold a toy drive to help. In addition, the PTA will adopt the same family for December that it adopted for Thanksgiving. The families were adopted through the township’s .

At the students and staff held a school-wide food drive to help those in need for Thanksgiving. The school ended up providing food for many needy families in the area.

In addition to a food drive for Thanksgiving, students are collecting for Toys for Tots and the fifth grade teachers and students will organize a food basket for a needy Irwin family. The PTA also is running Bingo Night in December to support Amandla's Crossing, a homeless shelter in New Brunswick.

For the December holidays at , the Student Council is sponsoring a PJ Day fundraiser for Foster and Adoptive Family Services. The money collected will provide holiday gifts for children. In addition, the fifth grade is organizing a gift drive for a veteran’s home in Edison.

At , students provided a Thanksgiving basket containing a full meal with all the fixins’ and will collect toys for Toys for Tots to be given in December.

For Thanksgiving, the Student Council collected food for families in need. For December, the school’s Early Act Club has adopted a local family. Members of the club pick a slip of paper with the name of a food item on it and then bring in that item. The students also buy gifts for the adopted family.

The students also created holiday cards for U.S. soldiers stationed abroad. More locally, the Student Council will be collecting winter clothes for the flood victims in Manville.

Students at donated baskets of Thanksgiving food to four needy families in November, and will be adopting four families for the winter holidays.

At , the Churchill Student Council will be doing a food drive for December, and will then assemble baskets of food for local needy families. In addition, the Churchill Interact Club will be holding a toy drive for local families.

At the , students held a food drive at the homecoming dance and Powder Puff game. Students will work with local programs to provide gifts to families while staff members will give to food banks rather than giving traditional staff gifts.

Even the administration staff is helping out this year, with various departments adopting an East Brunswick family to provide holiday gifts from a wish list.
