Memorial School on Track for September Completion

Webelos get an up close look at the new Memorial School.

A group of Webelos from Pack 223  and their parents filed into a trailer next to the Memorial School one Monday afternoon in December.

The Scouts huddled around a table and took in the blueprints for the new school, as well as some objects and items used in the building’s construction. The group was there to get an update on the school’s construction, as well as meet the requirements for one of their scouting achievements.

The district broke ground in March on a $17.956 million Memorial School project in March 2011. The school burned down in 2008, and students have been attending Corpus Christie in South River ever since at a cost of about $830,000 a year in rent and transportation.

The project is on track to be ready for the 2012-13 school year. The building will be enclosed by Feb. 15, the owner can begin to move in on July 16, and it will be available for occupancy Aug. 15.

During the presentation, Project Manager Carlos Torres showed the Scouts cross-sections of windows being used, cinder blocks, how to measure large areas, and gave the basic lay of the land for the new school.

The school, as described to the Scouts, will be two rectangular wings connected by two small passageways. The “rear” two-story wing will be the academic wing and will have classrooms and areas for small group instruction. The “front” wing will be home to the media center, music, art and the principal. In between the two will be a playground.

In addition, there will be two parking lots, one for bus pick up and drop offs, and a second for parents to drop students off. Leading from the lots will be the Memorial Walkway. Along the Memorial Walkway will be five stars, one for each branch of the military.
